It was alleged from the press conference that Maulana Chhalimullah, announced by Shah Ahmad Shafi as the director of Nazirhat Bara Madrasa,
was accused of embezzling Rs 5 crore from ordinary customers through a multipurpose company called Ehsan S Society. They claim that a self-interested group is conspiring to appoint Maulana Chhalimullah as the Muhtamim (director) of the traditional Jamia Arabia Nasirul Islam Nazirhat Bara Madrasa in Chittagong.
Yusuf Anshari, president of Nazirhat Bara Madrasa Sanrakshan Parishad, said, “If Muhtamim Idris of this 108-year-old traditional madrasa has just passed away, the controversial teacher of the madrasa Chhalimullah is trying to run the madrasa by claiming himself Muhtamim without heeding any rules. He is obstructing the Shura (policy making) meeting as per the rules and is threatening the Shura members in various ways. As a result, anger and tension are prevailing among the locals. At present,
seven cases are pending against this Maulana on various charges including money scam. Earlier, the Shura Board had also relieved him from the responsibility of the madrasa due to financial scandal.He further said, “A pious Fatikchhari resident like Chhalimullah will never accept the accused in the embezzlement case as the muhtamim of this traditional madrasa.”
One of the top leaders of Hefazat-e-Islam said on condition of anonymity, “After Hathazari Madrasa, this time Ahmed Shafi and his son Anas Madani have started the activity of placing people of their choice in Nazirhat Madrasa. However, after the death of Shaikhul Hadis Mohammad Idris, the director of Nazirhat Bara Madrasa, Mufti Habibur Rahman Qasemi,
the senior teacher of the madrasa, is acting director. In this situation, Ahmad Shafi Sahib is trying to appoint Maulana Chhalimullah as the Muhtamim (director) of the traditional Nazirhat Bara Madrasa in Chittagong.However, Ahmad Shafi’s supporters say that Maulana Ahmad Shafi could take this decision as the mutawalli of Nazirhat Bara Madrasa.
Opposing this demand, Allama Muhibbullah Babungari, former top leader of Hefazat-e-Islam and Muhtamim of Fatikchhari Babunagar Madrasa, said in a statement, The locals are excited and upset. I have instructed the agitated locals to be patient in all kinds of provocative activities in the interest of maintaining peace while still in control. I have said that whatever happens will happen through law and order. ‘
